She came to me in a dream: Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you Windy Storm, a female Roe from Final Fantasy XIV.
I had joked some time back: “Watch me make a third character that starts in Ul’dah”. Well, that day has come. I had a dream this morning that I was playing a character and the name Windy came to me, and Storm is the perfect last name. So I had already decided on that name before I woke up.
For those that don’t play FFXIV: there are three starting cities, and each has a slightly different story line at the beginning of the game. I already have characters who started in Gridania and Limsa Lominsa, so Ul’dah was left. I was eager to see it because Thancred is the Scion assigned to Ul’dah, and I heart Thancred.
I made Windy-the-character on October 17th, 2020. Windy-the-doll would be started in March of 2022. Around this time, there was artwork for one of the post-Endwalker patches that included the Warrior of Light (the player character) dressed in a traveling outfit. Well, people went NUTS for this outfit. Everyone who could draw was drawing their characters in it. I can’t draw, but I CAN knit, and so I set out to make it, and I decided on my streaming alt Windy because let’s face it, Windy is BAE.
I don’t have notes of how long it took to knit the doll herself, but I’d guess around 14 hours? I can do my base doll in a little over 12 hours. I put some extra rounds in her to make her taller (because she IS tall) and also tried short rows to create a bust. I was not successful at that, but it was a good attempt.
I completely designed the pattern for her outfit myself, based on the in-game outfit and official artwork. It took some doing! I had to swatch the box pleats to figure out how many stitches to cast on. The box pleats also required doing the tunic bottom up, and well, I had never done a bottom-up raglan. I think I ripped the raglan back four times before I got it figured out. BUT I DID IT!
This was quite a challenge, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results.
